2024: The Year That Taught Me How to Trust Myself
As the year comes to a close, I always carve out time to reflect on the biggest lesson I’ve learned. Sometimes, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what stands out the most—this year especially. It feels like I’ve lived so many different lives within these twelve months!
It’s been a rollercoaster, filled with profound lows and exhilarating highs. And isn’t that what life often feels like? Ideally, we all dream of smooth sailing—no unexpected twists, sharp drops, or loops. But when we look back, those wild turns and sudden changes are often what made the ride memorable. Even when it was tough, it was also transformative and, dare I say, fun in hindsight.
I didn’t always trust the process. When things went wrong, I would spiral into negativity—caught in a whirlwind of overthinking, stress, and self-doubt. This year, life threw curveballs: multiple layoffs, working for someone who didn’t appreciate me, and navigating uncertainty. At first, I felt powerless. But then, a realization hit me: I couldn’t control what happened, but I could control how I responded.
So, I chose trust.
I trusted myself. I trusted that I could handle anything life threw my way. I had no choice but to surrender to the chaos, to take things one step at a time. It wasn’t easy—my mind often tried to betray me with thoughts like, “You’re not good enough” or “Things will only get worse.” But I made a conscious effort to shift my mindset. Instead, I told myself, “Something better is coming” and “This is helping me grow.”
And you know what? It worked.
Surrendering and trusting the process changed everything. But let me clarify—trust doesn’t mean sitting back and waiting for life to happen. Trust means believing in yourself enough to take action, even when fear tries to hold you back.
This year, I trusted myself enough to leave a job that made me deeply unhappy, even though I didn’t have a backup plan. I trusted that I would figure it out—and I did. Now, I’m in a job I enjoy, surrounded by supportive colleagues. None of that would’ve been possible if I hadn’t trusted myself to leap into the unknown.
So, as we welcome the new year, I want to invite you to reflect on your own journey and the lessons this year has taught you.
